YUKYO YAMAMOTO – Face to face –

SHIHODO GALLERY is pleased to present “Face to face,” a solo exhibition by Yukyo Yamamoto.

In this exhibition, portraits of modern Japanese oil painters expressed by frottage of one-yen coins will be exhibited side by side with portraits of women they painted.
We may see many works of art depicting women, but can we picture the faces of the painters who created them?
When you hear the name of a painter, you may first associate him with his masterpieces.

The male painter and the female subject of the painting.
Yamamoto’s work is expressed in black-and-white portraits of these men and colorfully rendered images of these women.

The collection titled “Face to face” features portraits of painters associated with Kyushu and the female figures painted by them in coin frottage.

The majority of the figures depicted in the paintings are women. On the other hand, most of the painters are men. Women are painted and men paint. Such a composition seems somewhat biased.

On the other hand, even in the case of portraits that everyone knows, it is difficult to imagine the face of the artist. The relationship between the woman who is painted and the man who paints may be reversing its leadership as time goes by.

The works are titled “Artist of 1080 yen” and “Woman of 1080 yen,” and are painted with the same number of one yen coins. In other words, they are all of equal value.
We hope that everyone will be able to come face to face with them at the exhibition.
