At the Tobi Special Art Fair 2024, we will exhibit works by artists of the TaiheiyoGa-kai under the title of “Yani-ha” (Resin School).
As the impressionist-style Hakuba-kai led by Seiki Kuroda became the center of the Japanese oil painting world, the TaiheiyoGa-kai, which developed and succeeded the Meiji Bijutsu-kai, was ridiculed as the “Yani-ha” (Resin School).
*The name “Yani-ha” was used by the public to ridicule artists and works in this line because the coloring of their works gave a brownish, greasy impression. In Japanese, yani means grease.
About 120 years have passed without their work receiving due recognition. However, the artists’ solid and powerful painting style is appealing, and they continued to strongly depict Japanese scenes, which are usually emphasized only in delicacy, humidity, and emotion
This exhibition features works by Hiroshi Yoshida, Takeshiro Kanokogi, Hachiro Nakagawa, and Toraji Ishikawa, all now recognized as part of Japanese culture overseas.
