Modern Art – Ginza, Tai Nakatani Exhibition

We will participate in Modern Art – Ginza hosted by Ginza Galleries.
Shihodo Gallery is pleased to present “Tai Nakatani Exhibition”.

Tai Nakatani was born in 1909 in Matsusaka, Mie Prefecture.
At 20, he moved to Tokyo to become a painter.
After winning his first prize at the Shunyokai exhibition, he studied under Sohachi Kimura.
After the war, he exhibited at the Shunyokai and other exhibitions and served as a professor at the Tokyo University of the Arts.

Throughout his life, Nakatani dealt with familiar motifs.
Especially after the war, he painted many works depicting workers in distress due to disasters and other causes, as well as coal mines and potteries.
After his reportage-style paintings, he sought to capture the realistic landscapes and textures of coal mines and potteries.
Throughout his career, “human beings” were an important theme.

Nakatani honestly considered what he could depict and how he could express himself as a painter. We invite you to view his works, which carefully capture the people living in that era with his gentle painting style.
